Hmmm..., well, you don't mention which OS you are running, but I'll assume OS X, so if that is the case, the OS should recognixe the drive. I only say this because I replaced a DVD-ROM in a Pismo Powerbook with the Combo drive that comes in an iBook, and the OS recognized the drive fine. The optical drives in a tower all share the same connectors on newer machines, but I can't speak towards an 450 AGP because I never owned one. I've switched several drives in a G4 733 Digital Audio, and never had any problems. The only thing I would suggest is after installation, you make sure to download the latest Apple firmware for the Pioneer '05 model.

    Regards,
    Gus

    Macbook Pro keyboard!

The Mac keyboards do seem to be photogenic, don't they? I like the use of strong contrast in this image. What lens did you use and is there any of a vignette applied in post?

    ///http://www.mattsepeta.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Sepeta-Photography-4.jpg

Used some off camera flash to create contrast between the falling snow and the rest of the scene. Totally forgot to CTO gel it but oh well! Even more contrast now!
Nice composition except for the bright light. Maybe a long shutter time to streak the snow?

Interesting simple subject. Nice lighting and use of selective focus. The tone of the background is nice. Is this a lamp?

It would be pretty bad ass if the entire screen worked as a button (like the trackpad) so you can go home. You tap the screen to select something or click the screen to go home. :-D

Somehow I was expecting to see a lot more praise and excitement for the 3DS after it launched....

The 3D effect seems to trigger mixed reactions. Other than that...there really doesn't seem to be anything truly exciting about it? I don't see any "wow, those graphics!!" or "holy cow, this thing is fast/powerful" type comments.

The general vibe I am getting from here and other places is more like "pretty neat", rather than "wow, so awesome".

I think it's because the launch titles suck.

I like the 3D effect. It feels like you're looking into a box, instead of at a screen. Headaches, losing the sweet spot, etc, are a non-factor for me. And what they did with the AR is pretty awesome.

But no killer game. Which makes it a revolutionary piece of hardware that barely has anything to show off what it can do.

I have the Push working for Facebook but I cant hear anything... The notifications just come up... How do I set the sound?

    Should be in:

    Settings > Notifications > Facebook

Although I still get NO notifications no matter what, so I can't guarantee that'll work :(

I was thinking could Arn not give out a paid subscription to the forums for a year say when you hit milestones of 250,000 points or so?

Budget is around AUS$800-1000, and I will be getting most of the parts in 3 to 4 months unless there is new tech coming not to long after it?

i would love it if Arn would do that!

    what is that American?

it depends if you want to go intel or amd. also, you have to consider that the new GPU client is coming eventually, which should help ATI video cards greatly

I'm not a developer and have no idea what their policies are but will say I think it's a bit lame to have that double standard. If I was the cartoonist I wouldn't have resubmitted it. Or if I did it would have been a cartoon mocking the double standard of Apple.... I'd then blog about the whole experience. :D

all my PC friends constantly are reformatting their drives, worried about viruses etc

OSX is the best out there, even my tried & true PC friends know it...

Well, I have serious doubts that someone 'types in' the time for a network. I'm sure they have to configure the local towers to transmit the correct time zone, but that's not the same as typing in 2:00 AM and then waiting to the right second to press enter.

Dates and times aren't stored as hours and minute - it's usually some form of julian date, probably transmitted in UTC. It's up to the local device to correctly convert it to local time.

I note in passing that we're not hearing of any issues with regular phones - just iphones and other smart phones. Anyone have a basic phone show the wrong time?

The government already manages my retirement and my healthcare. Managing in-app purchases seems like small potatoes. Really, there are no limits to federal power anymore. They should just do whatever gets them a few minutes on TV to get re-elected.

Arggghhhh... I missed that day in class. Not really. I did forget, though. Don't know how I forgot... he was a fairly famous guy. The nuns would be so mad at me!

Instead of suing everyone, kodak needs to get on this retro kick and start selling kodachrome camera's and film again for cheap. Stop using digital, start developing.

Did Kodak stop making film? Doesn't the niche film market already buy Kodak film.... and get cool cameras from Goodwill?

That doesn't seem to be helping EK. I think they might need to innovate their way out of their slump. Suing, right or wrong (I don't pretend to understand), will not keep them afloat forever... especially when their patents expire.

    Speaking of that... let's see:
a 20 yr patent granted in 1996, probably filed in 1995

a lawsuit in 2011 that might take a bit of time if it isn't settled

More lawsuits to come if they are successful.

...Kodak seems to be cutting this a little close.

    Just asking the experts ...

Is it possible Apple could release the final version with the option to initialize a drive with ZFS prior to install? Everything I have read about ZFS seems to point to it as a next logical step for Apple's OS.

I'd guess about 40% chance of that (which is actually pretty good; the odds that they'll release a final version with the option to initialize a drive with NTFS are around 0%). I'd like to see it - I have seen the future, and it's ZFS.

    Well, this is confusing.

Last year Macrumors posters told me in no uncertain terms that CR is always wrong.

So how am I supposed to take this news?
    It's up to you.

It's like addressing any other reviewer: boors, cars, movies, restaurants, music, electronics, clothing, whatever. You decide yourself if a particular reviewer's voice rings true to you.

Some people read the New York Times' book reviews and pay care attention to Michiko Kakutani. Others couldn't care less.

A lot of people here have a problem with the way CR conducts their reviews. That's fine. Others trust their judgment. Replace "CR" with Engadget, Gizmodo, David Pogue, Walter Mossberg, Anandtech, etc. Same deal.

We can't tell you how to feel about this news. You have to figure it out yourself.

My previous post was worded a little poorly. Ansel Adams probably did make his own paper, and did a lot of "post processing" in the darkroom.

Back in the film SLR days, most hobby/amateur photographers did not participate in the "post processing" of their shots because they sent their film to a lab to get developed. That does not mean that there was no post processing being done to their pictures though.

    Anyone actually seen one?

Gamestop said they'll have a demo kiosk the day after the launch...

Yeah. A while ago I played with a Japanese import for a bit, no actual 3DS cart games just fiddling around with the built in one and the menu. Just played a UK one yesterday (Ridge Racer). I must say it's not only the best version of Ridge Racer I've played but the 3D effect was tremendous. Or maybe that game amplifies it a bit, but it was really quite deep.
The girlfriend was planning on going into HMV to buy a 360. That's when we were offered to try out a few games. Walked out with a 3DS preorder instead!

    We're smitten.

Wouldn't that be so annoying in the dark, like the backlight on the keyboard of a MBP when your watching a movie?

I've thought about that but I personally cup my thumb around the bezel so I wouldn't notice it....

Don't know how others hold it when surfing web/YouTube videos....
