No, I'm not talking about MP3 players I'm talking about phones. Nokia and Sony Ericsson, for example, is losing market share while Apple is gaining it from them.

Yes, but your point was that Apple will fail like other manufactures if they introduce different form factors. That isn't the case with the iPod selection.

Your point doesn't really hold much ground.

let us know frame rates etc!

My Late-2009 Mac Pro runs it on Ultra settings with no lag or stuttering. I don't know the frame rate, but it looks like it's at least 50fps to me. Very smooth, even during very large battles.

Your i7 iMac should be fine.

    Just my thoughts.

I think some of you are confused as to what Carrier preferences means. Its not saying anything about which iPad is selling better. All it says is which iPad people would like to have. It doesnt even mean which they do have. (AT&T iPad owner might want the Verizon one because of the bad service). So a AT&T iPad user may show under the Verizon numbers. Also its no shock the AT&T iPad is harder to acquire. Its most likely due to customers being use to the company. (example: mom buying her son an ipad will go to AT&T if they have AT&T phones.)

Remember a good deal of iPhone customers are still AT&T customers. So when they bought their iPad why not just by the AT&T one. So since the mass I users are already with AT&T it only makes sense that that iPad would sell better. Also understand that not all AT&T customers hate AT&T.

That almost makes me feel bad for selling a 16GB Wi-Fi only for $375 last week. oh well...I'm over it.

Don't feel bad I bought a first gen iPad right before the iPad 2 launch. I paid $500 for a 32GB 3G, and I still love it! Worth the money and will hold me over till iPad 3 retina display!

I just use map quest application. It is a free application and offers voice-based turn by turn directions with street names and all. Traffic updates really aren't worth the extra $40 if you ask me. And half the time I shut off the screen and just listen to the voice direction to save battery life, so 3D maps are a mute point with me... OTA map pulling really isn't all that bad. It loads your entire route when you load your destination (unless its extremely long, like cross-country) so if you don't deviate from its directions, you won't need service again to pull directions.

I have only had 1 issue on OTA map pulling with Map Quest. I once took a different way then suggested and caused the unit to re-rout me automatically. However, at that moment I didn't have service (Thanks AT&T, I was in NYC...) so the app prompted saying "re-routing not available at this time" and then 1 minute later it re-rerouted me when I got service. Not bad. It does everything I want it to. The only thing I wish it had was traffic updates. I have no idea why anyone charges for this. We should get it free with our data packages...

Anyone know if there is a jailbreak version of this app or will it not work because it is authenticated on the server side?

As someone already pointed out, the Army currently uses iPods with translation programs in the field.

The advantage is that they're comparatively cheap, and young soldiers already know the basics of using them.

It's also been mentioned that the Army could use them to display videos of local leaders asking people to cooperate, etc. Plus remote control of robots, etc.

As for visiting Apple, who knows. Usually the military finds a third party company to modify units, but in this case they could be checking to see if Apple was willing to build a bunch for less.

yeah all of those will help. especially that new mac pro. but even then, unless we are more active on this forum, people won't join the team

Very much agree, we have had great new participation for new users, even 100-200 ppd from a user is great and still will help the team out.

Since begining again and having lower points, I have now 2 dangerous enemies that are trying to take me out, stay away daygokid619 and Oculus, I have to admit it really is fun and I will make sure that none of you overtake me so I have recruited my iBook and old P4 to give me an extra 200ppd :p

I might build a system soon as well as my main is getting really old, should be able to afford it in 3-6 months, what do you guys recommend, I am on a thight budget. Thinking an AMD Phenom with 4gb of ram and a Nvidea gtx260?

Uh, why? How is it shameful? This isn't an item that is even remotely usable for studying with alone - what other electronics company does student discount on the scale that Apple does? The iPad is a glorified iPod touch, it is not a learning device (yet), not will it replace a computer in the home unless all you use is Facebook, even then you can't upload photos without the use of another computer.

Sarcasm, right? Any student, it doesn't even fulfill the needs of half of all students. It can't print, for one! Nor can you put pictures or anything onto it without the use of another computer, so how exactly does it replace a computer?

Like the way you just picked out a solitary post, ignored my other post, just to make your point ;0)

I said it's a companion device in a later post. I was a student, and I agree I wouldn't write an essay on an iPad. My 80wpm isn't blistering, but it would be slowed right down by the iPad and I would want to get my thoughts on the screen as quickly as possible

What it is good for is note taking in lectures, using the diary on the go, being able to surf the net, reference quickly, carry core texts around with you (core texts not replacing half a dozen books that need to be open at hte same time for quick reference), great for e mail on the go, great for facebook in those boring lectures where you're struggling to keep your self awake, and lots of other handy things.

Where it falls down is the lack of multi tasking, porn, illegal downloading, and lots of other things students find handy :D

I used a palm during my uni years, the think was fricking amazing for what I wanted it to do at the time. You don't always need to carry around one device that does it all, sometimes simplicity and convenience is what it's all about

Funnily enough I agree with your points, just don't try and bend what someone else has said to try and fit the point you want to make, you'll lose marks for that in your exams/ essays ;)

It seems like the majority of the comments are about Price, personal purchase and Higher ed use cases. All of these comments miss the point of what the announcement is about, institutional purchases. This is about school's buying large quantities, and really, since I have a hard time imagining that a University would be buying 10 packs of iPods . Yes, I know that schools like ACU have innovative 1:1 ipod /phone programs where they provide devices to the student, that is not really what this bundle is about). The target audience of a program like this is clearly K12. It is similar to bundles that apple currently has of 32 iPod touches and a Bretford cart or use in a K12 classroom.

This is all interesting, but the biggest challenge and obstacle that Apple has in K12 is that the iPod ecosystem is a consumer model. It is also not a Higher ed model, where students own their own device and are conditioned to the requiremet of buying their content. I work as a technologist for a 200+ school district and we have been trying to figure out for the better part of a year how to make this consumer product work in k12 setting.

We've been running pilots in several schools / classes since late spring of 09 and the biggest problem we have is getting a straight answer on how to liscence paid applications. We've asked several Apple representatives "if I buy a class set of 32 ipods, and I want to use a paid app, how many copies does the school need to buy, how many itunes accounts do we need, how many computers do we need to sync all 32 devices and how can we purchase using ta purchase order (no school is going to relish tying a credit card to a personal account, or cutting a PO for 30 $25 itunes gift cards!)

The answer we have gotten back every time has been not 32, not 1, not 1 for every 5 devices, but the question does not apply, the iPod and iTunes are consumer products and the enduser agreement is for consumers not institutions, and when asked for advice we've been told that Apple does not provide interpretations of their agreements and how we choose to interpret it is a mater that we should take up with our in-house council.

The good will and glow of Apple in education will continue to drive adoption of the ipod and ipad. I know millions of stimulus dollars went to ipods in school districts around the country, unfortunately, until Apple accepts the fact that school districts are not individuals and they have to "think different" and work with us when we ask for advice on how to successfully use their products in K12, much of the money and the potential will go o waste.

I hold my hand up, I did miss the point. I confused this with being one and the same as a student/ teacher discount. I didn't engage my brain there for a second.

I think Apple should give good discounts to educational establishments and students, hell it's far cheaper for them than marketing campaigns. Hook a student on an Apple and you've got a customer for life!

I agree with the crop. I'm not sure why I didn't think of it or do it before. I remember feeling the same way but then ignoring myself. :)

This is a "quick and dirty" crop using the crop tools in flickr. I would like more room on the right for the table. This is cropped to the edge of the empty chair, so to do a bit more room I'll have to erase the part of the chair that shows. I may try that when I have more time.

    http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5219/5497165546_28b1c933ff_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/22077805@N07/5497165546/)

That's better but give it a try even tighter. Bring the right edge up past the tray. That might make the toys jump out a little more. Same thing if you bring the bottom edge up closer to his elbow. You may have some room to bring the top and right in a little tighter to match the bottom and left crop.

I'm not sure if this will make a better photo but from what I see I think it is worth a try. (Gotta love the digital age!)

I found the original crop interesting at first glance but the more I looked at it the more I lost interest. It may have been the clutter of the bars and expanse of the table and chair to the right - the main focus seemed to get lost. I dunno. ;)

^ Yeah, how about voicemail? If its that important they'll leave a message. Shoot sometimes I even turn off my cell *GASP!* Dude, you need to go camping once in a while and get away from the world.

In my opinion, I don't think the "iPhone" will have more than 1GB just so that it wouldn't affect the sales of the lower capacity Nanos (the shuffle is an exception because its tiny and has a relatively lower concept).

A good selling point would have to be how fast you can put on your music. My sister's Treo is painfully slow at that.

... to apease old school folks like yourself. It's off by default. OSX has always been about not having to think about managing the OS and focusing on being productive, creative and enjoying the purpose of the computer. Letting the OS manage system resources is the next logical step.

Apps don't need to be running if they're not being used. If the OS saves all work and opening an app is nearly instantaneous, then there is no difference between a running app or a closed app running some services in the background.

Nonetheless, the ability to turn the lights back on is a temporary transitional ability. It will no doubt be gone in the OS after Lion and only few people clinging to the past will look to turn them on.Until all applications support this new feature we may be in for a bumpy ride. Especially when users expect their current applications to behave the new way. Much like the heart ache we saw with the iOS 3 to 4 transition.

On the first day of sales, I went to our local Mall. The Apple Store line was absurd,,,,100 yards. The AT&T line was about 50 people long. The Verizon store was literally empty. I don't trust surveys. The hard numbers will come out shortly.

Though it's not very clear, it looks like the capacity is listed as 12(X) GB. From what I've seen in any mass storage device, 8-10% of the storage space is missing for whatever reason (my 32GB iPhone has 29.1GB.) Even if it says 120GB, that's only 6.25% gone.

    This.

The settings also show a 128GB capacity.

    http://images.macrumors.com/article/2011/04/04/231008-S4022974_500.jpg

If this were a genuine 128GB unit, the settings would show something like 118GB capacity.

128 GB (storage size speak = 128 billion bytes) = 119.2GB (binary speak)

Subtract about 900 megs to a gig for the OS (judging by the stated capacity on an iPod touch 4 at iOS 4.3.1), and you have somewhere around 118-118.3GB.

Just also saw that the conservatives have tried just recently to get equal marriage rights outlawed and oppose abortion. Well, sorry- they aren't that different from our conservatives. They sound almost as bad on that front. They will try to outlaw equal marriage rights again, trust me.

Hang onto your hats, Canada, you're in for a very bumpy ride.
